Here’s goes something

During 2018, we’d been toying with the idea of moving to Europe. We were especially keen on Amsterdam or Berlin, but moving to either meant a huge amount of effort and risk-taking, and we worried that the one EU passport we had between us (a British one) would be rendered useless by Brexit.

Of course, expecting Brexit to happen in early 2019 was as foolish as thinking any intercontinental move would be anything other than risky and labor-intensive. Then the DV lottery came along, and suddenly all of our timelines had to change.

We’ll be posting more about the lottery process and the experience of moving to New York and getting to grips with its numerous peculiarities in the weeks ahead, but for now, what’s key is starting.

Because that’s what we’ve learned this year: Whatever it is you want to do, the crucial thing is getting started. Closely related to that is caring. That is, you need to care about what you’re doing if it’s going to turn into anything substantial.

‘Caring’ might mean making spreadsheets and checklists to ensure you don’t forget anything essential. It might mean roping in the right people to help you when you need it (and thanking them afterward).

Or it might be as simple as sitting down to brainstorm a website name, creating the site, and writing the first post for it. Welcome to Some Flux Given.
